Common Transmission Trouble: Gear Slipping

TransmissionGear slipping happens when your vehicle has not been properly maintained. If you notice that your vehicle has trouble switching gears, swaps gears on its own, or makes an odd sound whenever the gears shift, you should have it inspected and repaired immediately. Vehicles can be unpredictable if you were to attempt to drive it while having issues with gear slipping. Here are a couple reasons why the transmission is having trouble:

Worn out components – The parts that make up your transmission can start to have issues simply from normal wear and tear as the vehicle ages. The gears, transmission bands, and the clutch disk can all suffer from wear and tear that will eventually cause the transmission to slip. This can be difficult to replace if you don’t have a lot of experience with automotive maintenance and repairs. It’s a good idea to take your car to the shop as soon as you begin to experience problems with the transmissions so they can quickly pinpoint the issue.

Low fluid – The most common cause of gear slipping is low transmission fluid. This is a simple fix and easy to maintain. Check the fluid levels to make sure they are properly maintained. If you notice that the fluid is burnt or full of metal particles it needs to be drained and replaced fully. Exceptionally low levels of transmission fluid could indicate a leak and should be examined right away.

It’s a good idea to have your transmission fluid checked and maintained every couple of years. If your transmission is giving you trouble, contact A&A Transmission today.
